Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant predicted LeBron James will play at an elite level at age 42 no matter where the 22-time All-Star signs this summer.
Durant spoke to reporters on Tuesday after attending the MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia. He then traveled to Fanatics Fest in New York, where he is scheduled to record a podcast Thursday and film a show Friday. James could reveal his 2026-27 destination at any moment this week.
“Wherever he goes, I know he’s going to ball out and show that he still got a lot left in the tank at 42 years old,” Durant told NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark. “Any team is going to be better because of him.”
Why James’ move matters to Durant
James’ free-agency timeline has dominated NBA chatter since the season ended. The Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers are listed as the frontrunners. ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel also noted the Golden State Warriors remain in the mix despite James’ recent vacation with Warriors forward Draymond Green in Puerto Rico.
Durant’s Rockets were barely linked to James. Houston’s front office has instead emphasized its young core. James and the Lakers eliminated Durant’s Rockets in the first round of the 2026 playoffs in May.
What Durant sees for James’ next chapter
Durant’s forecast hinges on James’ relentless work ethic. The four-time MVP turns 42 in December but has shown no signs of slowing. He averaged 25 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in 2025-26 while ranking top-10 in Player Efficiency Rating for a 19th straight season.
“He’s still got that hunger,” Durant said. “Age is just a number when you treat every day like it’s your first.”
Fanatics Fest looms large for both stars
Durant and James will both be in New York this week. James is expected to announce his decision at Fanatics Fest after his Thursday podcast and Friday shoot. Durant’s presence adds another layer of intrigue to the event.
The festival’s schedule includes basketball panels and fan interactions. Organizers have billed it as the NBA’s biggest offseason stage. Both stars’ schedules suggest a high-profile moment is coming soon.
